Introduction

Blue Lightning Internet uses a number of different types of username and password in order to grant access to the facilities offered to customers. Not all these usernames and passwords are the same, and confusion often arises as to which username and password to use for which service or facility. This document explains the differences between the various types and where to use them.

Central Authentication

Central authentication is used to grant you access to the account management functions on our website. The username and password follow the following format:

  • Customer: 6 character customer code as found on any Blue Lightning Internet invoice
  • Password: Case sensitive string with mixed case letters and sometimes numbers

Your central password matches the postmaster passwords for any domains you may have hosted with us. When you change your central password, your postmaster password will be updated to match in the small hours of the following morning.

FTP Authentication

FTP usernames and passwords are used to connect to our FTP server, which in turn allows you to upload content to any web hosting accounts you may have with us. They follow this format:

  • Username: 6 character customer code (as used in central authentication) plus two further numbers (total 8 characters)
  • Password: Case sensitive string with mixed case letters and sometimes numbers

POP3, IMAP and Web Mail Authentication

Our POP3, IMAP and Web Mail servers all use the same usernames and passwords in order to allow you access to your e-mail. In all cases, the following formats apply:

For single mailbox domains:

  • Username: "postmaster@yourdomain.com" (full e-mail address, without the quotes)
  • Password: Case sensitive string with mixed case letters and sometimes numbers

For multiple mailbox domains:

  • Username: "<mailbox>@yourdomain.com" (full e-mail address, without the quotes, substituting <mailbox> with the actual name of the mailbox concerned)
  • Password: Case sensitive string with mixed case letters and sometimes numbers

Mailbox Administration Authentication (QMailAdmin)

QMailAdmin usernames and passwords allow you to administer mailboxes within your domain names. However, they are only available to domains for which the e-mail is handled by mailboxes on our system. The usernames and passwords follow this format:

  • Username: "postmaster" (without the quotes)
  • Domain: "yourdomain.com" (without the quotes)
  • Password: Case sensitive string with mixed case letters and sometimes numbers

Storage Area Network (SAN)

Storage Area Network usernames and passwords grant you access to your remote file storage accounts on our storage area network servers. The usernames and passwords follow this format:

  • Username: 6 character customer code, plus a further four digits
  • Password: Case sensitive string with mixed case letters and sometimes numbers

Accessing and changing passwords

If you have lost a username or a password for one or more services, you can generate a full password report. You will need to re-enter your central password for security reasons.
